Risk Assessment Reports The following set of guidelines will be used to assess risk assessment reports and are presented here for the applicant’s information.

1.The Population of Interest is Clearly Defined - Was there an attempt to gain first-hand knowledge of the community, population, individuals, potentially rare or sensitive species or conditions? If there was an attempt, was it scientifically credible?

2. Exposure Pathways are Clearly Defined and Considered - Was there a demonstration of an understanding of the interactions of the human, animal and /or plant life via soil, sediment, surface and/or groundwater and air?

3. Effects Assessment - Does the assessment cite and rely on primary research sources (or the applicant’s own studies) or are Toxicity Reference Values (TRV's) or similar levels chosen without adequate scientific review? Are differing exposure routes considered?

4. Uncertainty Analysis - Does the report reflect an adequate appreciation of the limitations of the analysis and the various sources of uncertainty based on the biological aspects of the problem?

5. Implications or Risk Management - Does the overall environmental risk assessment show clearly how complex biological systems will respond to a range of management decisions undertaken to reduce perceived risks and what options are available for better protecting individuals, populations and communities?
