Registered Professional Biologist

New Biologist in Training (BIT) and Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) entrance requirements are in effect January 1, 2020. Applications received after this date will be assessed under the new standards. If you applied prior to January 1, links to the appropriate forms will be emailed to you. You may contact the office with any questions.

Applicants for membership are required to successfully complete Part A and Part B below. For details pertaining to membership, see Schedule 3 of the College Rules

Part A – Credentials Review

The College accepts electronic submission of application documents only. Transcripts and international credential evaluations must be mailed directly from the institution to the College of Applied Biology.

Once all documentation has been received, applications are assessed by the Credentials Committee and the Registrar. The College will email the applicant when the application has been forwarded for review.

Streams of Entry

RPBio applicants must apply under one of the following streams of entry.

  • Stream 1: College accredited program
  • Stream 2: Non-accredited program (<15 years of applied biology work experience)
  • Stream 3: Post-secondary degree plus 15 years of applied biology work experience
  • Stream 4: Graduate/post graduate degree plus applied biology work experience
    • MSc in applied biology + 13 years of work experience
    • PhD in applied biology + 11 years of work experience

RPBio Application Requirements 

  1. Application Form and Fee
  • The application form provides details regarding an applicant’s background as well as contact information
  • Payment of the application fee is mandatory for the application to be reviewed
  • An incomplete application will remain open for one year from the date of application

  • Guidelines for RPBio/BIT Course Assessment 
  • Academic Self-Assessment
    • This form is a guide to applicants on how their academic background meets requirements for entry into the College
    • A course is defined as occurring over 1 semester, which includes at least 3 lecture or lab hours per week
  • Course Descriptions Form
    • Stream 1 applicants are only required to submit course descriptions for conditional courses not specifically listed under College accredited programs
    • Stream 2, 3 & 4 applicants must submit the respective course descriptions form
  1. Official Transcripts
  • Official transcripts must be mailed directly from all post-secondary institutions where you completed courses, including the institution(s) showing credentials granted, to:

  • Electronic transcripts are accepted only if they are accessed directly by the College of Applied Biology Registrar through a secure site offered by the granting institution
  • Internationally educated applicants (outside Canada and the United States):
    • Credential evaluation directly from a recognized credentialing service such as WESICES or IQAS
    • Transcripts not in English require an English translation, sent by a certified translator directly to the College

      5. Work Experience Worksheet

  • Stream 1 & 2 applicants must have 3 years of work in applied biology that demonstrates professional level judgment and discretion. Up to 7 months of work experience may be volunteer. The worksheet itemizes the competenies required
  • Stream 3 applicants must have at least 15 years of applied biology work experience
  • Stream 4 applicants must have applied biology work experience as follows:
    • MSc in applied biology + 13 years of work experience
    • PhD in applied biology + 11 years of work experience
  • A CV may be attached to the worksheet

     6. Professional Reports Worksheet and Upload 

  • Indicate by page numbers where in each report the criteria is met
  • See the Report Guidelines for details on report criteria 
  • If the applicant is not the primary author of a report, the primary author must submit a Report Authorship Declaration identifying the areas for which the applicant was responsible
  • Reports must be submitted in English
  • Reports completed for undergraduate course work will not be accepted (including Honours BSc thesis)

Self-Directed Reports

  • For applicants whose employment does not provide opportunities to generate a report that meets the College's requirements, a Self-Directed Report may be accepted. See the Self-Directed Report Form or contact the Registrar

       7. Scientific Communication

  • Applicants must submit one example of work in which they communicated scientific concepts to a lay audience
  1. Confidential Reference Forms
  • References are required from 3 individuals who have known the applicant for a minimum of 6 months and who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s experience as a biologist and can attest to the applicant's competencies
  • Referees are required to describe the applicant's skills and abilities in specific competency areas
  • Only 2 of the 3 references may be from the applicant’s current employer
  • It is preferred if the references are from registered professionals; however, this is not mandatory
  • Referees are to submit the Confidential Reference Form

Part B – Professional Ethics Course

  • The College will notify the applicant of the outcome of the assessment by email
  • If approved, the applicant is to complete the College online course in professional ethics within one year of approval, prior to full membership. The cost of the course is $200
