Amendments to RAR and effects to RBTech designation
On July 19, 2019, the Province finalized a regulation to amend the Riparian Area Regulation. The College is aware that this amendment has created a conflict for members with the Registered Biology Technologist (RBTech) designation who are seemingly absent from mention in the new regulation. The new regulation comes into effect on November 1, 2019.
To be clear, from the College’s perspective work under the Riparian Area Regulation is within the scope of independent practice of RBTechs based on Schedule 5 of the College Rules, provided they have completed the necessary training in that field.
The College has had informal talks with government representatives at various levels within the Resource Stewardship Division and is arranging a formal meeting with the Assistant Deputy Minister responsible for the statute to resolve the issue. We will update members on the progress of these engagements.
Should you have any questions regarding the RAR statute or scope of independent practice for RBTechs, please contact College Director of Practice Shona Lawson at [email protected] or call the College office phone at 250-383-3306.
