2020 Annual General Meeting and Conference

The College cancelled the 2020 Conference due to the COVID-19 public health crisis. The 2020 Conference was entitled Paradigm Shifts & Partnerships and was to be held in Kelowna on April 2 and 3, 2020.

We will maintain the page below for interest sake but please note that the information is no longer valid.

The College of Applied Biology Annual General Meeting & Conference will open with two seminars, the AGM and an evening reception on Thursday, April 2, followed by the plenary Conference on Friday, April 3. This year's theme is "Paradigm Shifts & Partnerships: Opportunity, Momentum, Growth".

The conference structure is a series of panels featuring two to four speakers apiece. Each speaker will deliver a short presentation before the discussion opens to questions from attendees. Panel topics and panelists have been developed and invited by the College's Conference Planning Working Group.

Members will have the opportunity to participate in both the conference and the AGM through a live web broadcast. Members who attend the AGM that precedes the Conference will be eligible to claim to two CPD points and participation in the Conference will be valued at a maximum of nine points -- one each for Thursday's seminars and seven for the Friday plenary.

Keynote Speaker:

The College is pleased to welcome Art Napoleon (Âciw), Host and Co-Producer of APTN's Moosemeat & Marmalade as the 2020 Conference keynote speaker.

Art grew up in the boreal forests and mountains of Northern BC where he learned hunting, plant use and outdoor cooking. Art holds an MA in Language Revitalization from the University of Victoria, is an advocate of Indigenous food sovereignty and practices subsistence activities on a seasonal basis. Based in Victoria, BC, Art remains connected to his home territory and his Cree and Dane Zaa roots. When he is not producing TV, he tours regularly as a performer and speaker. His moose stew has been known to cure hangovers and his campfire tales have mended broken hearts…or so the stories go.

Art Napoleon (Âciw)

At the 2020 Conference, Art will present a keynote entitled Indigenous Land Stewardship: A Holistic Model.

From Cree concepts such as miyopimâtisowin (the good life) and wahkôtowin (interrelatedness), Art will explore broader concepts such as Indigenous food sovereignty and perspectives on land stewardship. With issues such as climate change, the depletion of wildlife species, and an economic system that is not prepared for the depletion of "natural resources", the world is at a crossroad. Is it time to examine our interconnectedness with nature and reframe Western thinking on environmental management?
